Charity begins at Home.

My Mum has Emphysema, I think I may have blogged about it before. It’s one illness in a group all under the umbrella term of COPD (Chronic, Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and it’s nasty, they all are. But typically, instead of sitting back and letting the illness rule her life, Mum has stepped up and taken control. She lives with Emphysema, it doesn’t rule her life and she does everything she can to raise both awareness and money for the British Lung Foundation through Breathe Easy groups - Her local one is the Neath Valley group.

In April they did a sponsored Abseil…..

That’s Mum, in the brown coat at the bottom of Dinas Rock - where she persuaded a variety of people to follow my Dad in abseiling down the rock face.

There’s my Dad, and also abseiling was…

That’s Emrys, he’s the Chairman of BLF Wales and Thoracic surgeon for Morriston Hospital in Swansea. There were politicians too…

Roger Williams, MP for Powys.

Lowri and Ffion were the youngest abseilers at age 8 and the crowd that turned out to watch them all, there were many many more, was substantial.

Why were they all doing it? Why did all these people go and abseil in April? This is why….

That’s Mum again, and her friend Mary - see the oxygen tubes? They need the oxygen and they need support and good quality care as well as research and equipment and all of those are in short supply.

This is Dylan, with his Dad and Grandma. Dylan was born with COPD and needs to be constantly monitored because his oxygen levels drop unexpectedly.

People like these are why all those folks abseiled off Dinas Rock in April and between them they raised £7,500. £3,000 of that has already been gifted to BLF Wales and Breathe Easy Neath Valley are currently discussing which equipment they wish to purchase for Cimla and Neath Port Talbot hospitals with the rest.

Special thanks are owed to Call of the Wild for donating their time and equipment and making the day possible.

If anyone wants to help by donating to Neath Breathe Easy then get in touch and I’ll let you know how.

  1. Beautiful story hon of people learning how to live with and overcome the challenges life brings them.
This was truly heart warming to hear of so many pulling together for a united cause.

  2. Hi Rae,
    Thanks for your kind comment.
They did it for the first time last year and had 75 people abseil, this year I think it was over 100 and the amount they raised was fantastic.
